LED Hub
A screen built for the camera
In March 2025, Netron opened LED HUB Studio in Drammen, Norway’s first dedicated virtual production facility. The idea started with early experiments in 2021 and grew into a full-scale studio through years of research, testing, and collaboration.
LED HUB is more than a soundstage. It is a place where filmmakers, producers, and creatives can explore new ways of working with virtual production. With a 440 m² stage, six-meter ceiling height, and direct ground-floor access, the studio is built to handle ambitious projects. Just as importantly, it serves as a meeting point where professionals and students can share knowledge, learn together, and push the technology forward.
At the center of the studio stands an Expromo LED wall, a 4 × 14 meter screen with high brightness and fine pixel pitch. This screen makes it possible for LED HUB to simulate environments with complete control, giving directors and cinematographers the freedom to create scenes that look convincing straight through the camera.
How Technology and Screen Work Together
Virtual production depends on the flawless interplay between cameras and LED displays. The Expromo wall at LED HUB is engineered to deliver exactly that.
-
Optimal conditions for the camera: With ultra-high refresh rates, the wall ensures that cameras capture seamless images without flicker, banding, or visual artifacts. This means less time spent correcting issues in post-production.
-
Creative control on set: Directors and cinematographers can define every detail of the scene—lighting, atmosphere, and background—without being limited by weather, location, or time of day.
-
Efficiency for production teams: Fewer errors and fewer re-takes mean smoother shooting schedules and more predictable budgets. Productions that once required extensive location work or digital fixes can now be realized entirely within the studio.
- Coated for easy maintenance: The wall has coating on the panels, which makes it more robust and easier to clean and maintain.
Technical setup
The power of the LED HUB installation lies in its cinema-grade engineering. Two critical specifications set Expromo’s wall apart:
-
7680 Hz Refresh Rate
Refreshes thousands of times per second, ensuring clean, stable imagery even at extreme frame rates. This allows for superslow motion capture without flicker, and supports productions with multiple cameras shooting simultaneously. -
1/16 Scan Division (Drive Method)
Updates the full image rapidly and evenly across the wall, keeping pace with the camera. This prevents mismatched frames and reduces errors that would otherwise require expensive post-production correction.
Together, these specifications ensure that what directors see on set is exactly what the camera captures. The benefits are clear:
-
Superslow motion and multi-camera freedom, without visual compromise.
-
Less post-production time, faster delivery, and lower costs.
-
A film set that functions like a supercomputer, providing unmatched precision and reliability.
